Houston Endowment

What is Houston Endowment?

Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones established Houston Endowment in 1937 to improve life for the people of greater Houston. Houston Endowment invests in sound organizations, proven programs and innovative approaches. The foundation reviews each application to determine the answers to three critical questions:

  • What specific results does the applicant seek to achieve?
  • What is the likelihood those results will be achieved?
  • Does this project or application stand out as an exceptional use of Houston Endowment resources, given the range of competing community needs and opportunities?

Who are eligible for the Houston Endowment?

Houston Endowment makes grants to organizations and projects serving greater Houston, defined for our purposes as Harris County and its contiguous counties (Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller Counties). The foundation also supports projects throughout the state that are central to Texas history.

Grants are made to nonprofit organizations recognized as public charities by the Internal Revenue Service.

How to apply for the Houston Endowment?

Houston Endowment accepts applications throughout the year and has no designated deadlines for the submission of requests. The foundation has recently implemented a comprehensive online Grant Management System. Paper applications will continue to be accepted by mail during the transition; however, applicants choosing to submit them should use the appropriate application found in Types of Investments. The foundation prefers online submissions and intends to employ the online Grant Management System exclusively after the transitional phase.

Each submitted application is reviewed and analyzed by members of the foundation staff, with particular attention given by an assigned grant officer. Final action is taken by the board of directors.

Application Steps:

  • Go to the program area (Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Health or Human Services) that best matches your request.
  • From the program area, select the result area and type of investment that best match your request.
  • Click on the link at the bottom of this page to begin an application or for instructions to submit an application by mail.
