Driving trucks for long distances call for a different set of driving skills. Your regular city driving license for your car or van will not allow you drive these massive vehicles. You would need a commercial driver’s license for that, and getting one requires training in a truck driving school. Many people who have gone through this training and went on to become truck drivers have become successful even without any college or university degree. And if you can’t afford to pay for training, you can try to obtain government grants for CDL license which will pay your way to being a truck driver.
There will be several colleges in your state that have both federal and state grants for qualified students. You can try going to those and see if they have courses that allow you to obtain a CDL. There will also be career centers run by the state which offer grant money for unemployed workers.
Commercial Driver License State Programs – this program is handled by the Department of Transportation through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The objectives of this program include the reduction of incidence and severity of crashes, human fatalities and injuries in accidents involving large commercial vehicles like trucks and buses. This is to be accomplished by making sure that the State is in compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations pertaining to the issuance of CDL, driver testing and disqualification. Grant money may only be spent on purchasing computer hardware and software, testing, training, publications, personnel, quality control and fraud prevention. It is not applicable for renting, leasing or buying buildings or land. Average amount of grant is from $15,000 to $1.5 million. More information can be obtained here:

Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Training Grants – This training grant is meant to provide financial help to individuals involved in the training of current and future commercial vehicle drivers. The funds received through this grant are to be used for expanding the number of CDL holders who have been trained on operator safety. Training commercial vehicle drivers will minimize the crashes on our road network. Grant money can also be spent on assisting poor regions in the country and provide training opportunities for eligible persons to be trained as commercial vehicle operators. The amount of grant money range from $50,000 to $222,000 and is determined by the FMCSA. You can get more information here:
