Grants for Aviation

Those who support the advancement of the general aviation industry can avail of several federal grants for aviation. You can obtain grants to finance research on how to make aviation safer, educating the public about aviation laws and regulations, or creating opportunities to advance the field of aviation in general.

The following federal grants for aviation can be availed of by individuals or institutions, colleges, universities, or for-profit or non-profit organizations, depending on each individual grant.

FAA Programs under the Recovery Act

  • Grants in Aid for Airports – this grant is provided for those involved in planning and developing systems to make our airports more efficient and safe. The grant can be used for developing projects to augment safety, security and capacity of our airports.
  • Facilities and Equipment – this grant is for financing modernization and improvement of airway facilities and equipment, and air traffic control. The funds can be used to set up and rehabilitate air navigation equipment and aviation safety systems, including the upgrading of power systems, air traffic control towers, and air route traffic control centers. Additionally, the funds can also be spent for improving facilities for terminal radar approach control, and equipment used for navigation and landing.

FAA Research Grant Programs

  • Aviation Research – this grant is awarded for conducting research to help expand and grow civil aviation. Topics for research include artificial intelligence as applied in aviation, aircraft safety, automation, and training techniques and technologies. Eligible applicants and grant recipients are universities, colleges and non-profit organizations doing aviation research. Most aviation research proposals have requested for amounts ranging from $15,000 to $5 million, although available data reports most grants have been between $50,000 and $250,000.   • Catastrophic Failure Prevention Research – this grant is awarded for conducting research related to risk assessment and prevention of failures, defects, and malfunctions of articles used in aircraft, and other aircraft related parts. You can find out more about this grant here:

  • Aviation Security Research – this grant is awarded for researching, developing and implementing technologies to counteract and neutralize acts of terrorism against civil aviation. The funds can be used by universities, colleges and both for-profit and non-profit organizations for research in technologies for system security.
