Grants for Children

The federal government, State governments, local government entities, private organizations and other nonprofit groups offer a wide array of grants for children for purposes that range from health care to safety in the playground. Grant opportunities may cover research projects, food assistance, nutrition education, education initiatives, and funding for any organization or initiatives that serve directly the children.

Maternal and Child Health Bureau

The Bureau, under the Department of Health and Human Services, awards a Title V Block Grant that provides funds to health programs for children, such as program to reduce the mortality of infants, improve the access to healthcare by low-income children, and to coordinate the systems of health care for children with special needs. The programs that are currently funded by this grant are Head Start and the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Emergency Medical Services for Children.

Administration for Children and Families

The Department of Health and Human Services’ ACF offers grants that provides funding for the Programs Serving Abandoned Infants, Infants at Risk of Abandonment and Infants at Risk of Maltreatment and their Families. The grant also provides fund for a national resource center for organizations who serve abandoned children and infants. The center offers training for the professionals who deal with infants and children who are at risk of abandonment, maltreatment and neglect, with emphasis on infants who are exposed to the dangers of HIV/AIDS and illegal drugs.

Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service

The agency sponsors a grant for Special Milk Program for Children. The funding is given to eligible State agencies that provide assistance to the nutritional needs of children. The grant money is used to subsidize the purchase of milk for public schools, private schools that are operating not for profit, and preschools and daycare facilities.

Department of Justice Violence Against Women Office

The agency awards a Children and Youth Exposed grant. Funding is given to eligible nonprofit organizations, tribal organizations, government agencies or entities, and providers of victim service that render services to children who are exposed to domestic abuse or violence. The grant money may be used for projects or programs that offer services that targets children. These projects may include counseling, mentoring, as well as training for agencies and professionals that render services to children.
